Host: Welcome to Get Heard Of, where local businesses tell you who they are and what they do. Today I'm chatting with Chris, from Chris's Roofing and Building Services. Morning, Chris.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Morning. Good to be here.
Host: So let's get into it.
Host: What does a typical day actually look like for you?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Honestly? There isn't really a typical one. Could be up a ladder sorting a leak first thing, then plastering a ceiling in the afternoon.
Host: Right, so quite a mix.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Yeah, that's the nature of it. One day might be a full re-roof, the next it's a bit of general building work. Keeps things interesting, put it that way.
Host: And is that mix of roofing and building work something you planned, or did it just grow that way?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Bit of both, I suppose. I started out in roofing, but you learn pretty quickly that roofs don't exist on their own. They sit on top of a building, so you end up understanding the rest of it too.
Host: That makes sense.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: It does. So over time I've picked up extensions, loft conversions, retaining walls, plastering and decorating. It all sort of connects, you know.
Host: So if someone's having a loft conversion, you're not just doing the roof bit and handing them off to someone else?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: No, that's the idea. I can see the whole job through, roof down to the plastering, rather than it being three different trades trying to talk to each other.
Host: That must save people a headache.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: It does, yeah. Less chasing people around, less stuff falling through the gaps between trades.
Host: Who would you say your work is best suited to?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Homeowners mostly, anything from a small repair to a full re-roof or extension. But I do a fair bit for landlords too, and property management companies.
Host: Oh, what sort of thing do they need?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Landlords tend to want someone reliable for roofing issues, general repairs, decorating between tenants, that kind of thing. Management companies, it's often about responding when there's a leak or storm damage.
Host: And what about older properties, do they bring their own challenges?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: They can, yeah. Older homes often need roofing and building work together rather than one or the other, so having both under one roof, so to speak, helps.
Host: Ha, nice one.
Host: So when someone calls you with a roof problem, how do you decide whether it's worth repairing or not?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: I just tell them straight. If a repair makes sense, I'll say so. If the roof's really reached the end of its life, I'll say that too.
Host: People must appreciate that.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: They do, more than you'd think. A lot of people would rather hear the honest answer than the cheapest one, if that makes sense.
Host: It does.
Host: And because it's a small operation, is it always you people are dealing with?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Yeah, that's it really. No call centres, no salesperson turning up and then someone else doing the work. You speak to me, and I'm the one on the job or overseeing it.
Host: That's reassuring, especially for bigger jobs like extensions.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Exactly. People like knowing who's actually going to be there.
Host: Well, this has been a great look behind the scenes. If people want to find out more, where should they go?
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: They can head to the website, chriss hyphen roofing hyphen building hyphen services dot org, all one word really, just chriss-roofing-building-services.org.
Host: Perfect. That's Chris's Roofing and Building Services, thanks so much for chatting with us, Chris.
Chris's Roofing and Building Services: Thanks for having me.
Host: And that's it for this episode of Get Heard Of, we'll catch you next time.
